On the heels of winning the Class D title at the Section 2 championships Nov. 5, the boys cross country team headed to the NYSPHSAA Cross Country State Championships today, receiving a big Mayfield send-off before boarding their bus.
Junior Cam Abdella led the team to their Sectional victory at Saratoga Spa State Park, winning the race in 16:41.72. Senior Braydon Jourden took third, while senior Dawson Leach and junior Trevor Ruberti also finished in the top 10. Hunter Jones and Shane VanNostrand, both seniors, and sophomore Gabe Lucero rounded out the winning team.
Abdella is the first Mayfield runner to win at Sectionals since 2000, and the team is the first to win a States berth since 2010.
The States-bound team is led by head coach Rebecca Newkirk and assistant coach Sharon Roth.
The team received an enthusiastic send-off on Friday by members of the Mayfield Junior-Senior High School student body, who lined the halls as the athletes ran through. The fire department and members of the sheriff’s department escorted the team bus out of town.
The Class D boys race kicks off at noon on Saturday, November 13, at Chenango Valley Golf Course.
