Kaylee Bumpus and Devante Marshall (pictured at right) have received the Capital Zone AHPHERD (Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance) Leadership Award.
The award recognizes students in their senior year who meet the following criteria:
1. Scholastic Achievement
2. Exceptional Leadership
3. Outstanding Service to school and/or community
Kaylee and Devante were honored along with the other top student-athletes in the Capital area at a banquet in Schenectady on Sunday, January 31.
Kaylee Bumpus is a three-sport athlete presently ranked 1st in her graduating class. Kaylee is a respected Scholar-Athlete and member of our school and community. She is a team captain for both the volleyball and basketball teams as well as one of the top scorers for the track team. Kaylee is a Western Athletic Conference All-Star in all three sports, a 200 meter run sectional Champion for track, and just finished her fall volleyball season as a 1st team all-star, WAC MVP, Section 2 All-Star, and 1st team All-State for leading her team to the Semi-Final round of the state tournament. She was also named a Times Union 1st team All-Star and joined her teammates being honored with the state team sportsmanship award for volleyball.
Kaylee has annually earned the Presidential Physical Fitness award and takes her health and fitness goals seriously. Along with athletics, Kaylee is active in her church youth group and soup kitchen. She is a National Honor Society member, plays club volleyball, performs in the select choir, and can be found at most school events supporting her classmates and school.
But on top of her many accomplishments Kaylee is an exceptionally compassionate caring person who strives to not only excel herself but to support others to be the best they can be. She is a great role model and inspiring young adult. Kaylee plans to continue her volleyball career at the collegiate level while studying Physical Therapy. She has been offered scholarships at Acadia University and Roger Williams University but as of yet, not made her decision.
Devante Marshall is a multi-sport athlete competing in X-Country Running, Nordic Skiing, and Track & Field for his entire high school career. Devante earned a spot at the New York State Nordic ski championships in 2014 and continues to be one of the top skiers in Section 2. He is also a committed musician playing in the Concert Band, Jazz Band, and can be found running the soundboard for the Drama Club.
Devante is active in the Boy Scouts. He has earned the “Life Scout” position and continues to stay active as a leader in the program. Devante is a member of the National Honor Society and volunteers at many service events for both the Boy Scouts and honor society. He has had a perfect attendance record for his entire HS career and is an annual National Physical Fitness award winner as well.
Devante and his family have hosted exchange students and he hopes to one day travel himself. Devante holds himself to high standards as a scholar-athlete and person. He is an exemplary school citizen and great role model in all settings. Devante hopes to attend The Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall where he earned the RIT Innovation and Creativity Scholarship. He will be studying Film Animation.
