The second grade team is dedicated to building and nurturing a strong foundation between home, school, and the community.
Our goal is to differentiate instruction in order to meet the needs of each individual.
Home-School Communication
· Students will carry homework folders to and from school each day. These folders will have a ‘To Do’ side and a ‘Finished’ side. Please check your child’s folder every day.
· Please call or email any immediate concerns. To provide uninterrupted instruction to your children the best time to call is between the times of 1:30–2:00pm or 3:00-3:30pm.
· Please refer to Mayfield Parent-Student Handbook, or individual teachers for behavior expectations.
Academic Goals
- By May, all students will have reached the benchmark goal for the second grade DIBELS assessment.
- By June, all students will be able to read, recall, and spell all 133 required, second grade sight words.
- By the end of second grade, all students should be able to write a short story with a beginning, middle, and end, while also meeting the goals set by the second grade rubric.
- By the end of second grade, students will have gained an understanding of math facts, word problems, patterns and functions, as well as the basic operations of mathematics.
- By the end of second grade, students will be organized, responsible, and emerging independent learners.
Homework Policy
- In second grade you can expect your child to have approximately 15-20 minutes of homework per night to include, but not be limited to: spelling, reading, writing, grammar, math facts, and math.
- Daily reading is an essential component of learning success. We strongly encourage participation in READ 25 and Book It! reading programs. These programs coupled with our curriculum will provide literacy success for your child. Please inform teachers if you need more READ 25 forms or materials to complete projects.
